Bagrada hilaris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), An Invasive Stink Bug Attacking Cole Crops in the Southwestern United States

چکیده
An invasive stink bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was discovered in theWestern Hemisphere in 2008 near Los Angeles, CA, presumably introduced on container shipments arriving at the Port of Long Beach. In the subsequent 4 years, it has spread throughout southern California, southern areas of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, southern and west–central New Mexico, and extreme western Texas. We initiated studies on the seasonality and host range of this invasive insect as it adapts to this non-native habitat. We have learned that the bagrada bug has a single population peak between July and October in urban areas dominated by native and introduced weeds, and two population peaks (March–May and September–November) timed with the productionof cole crops in agricultural areas. In greenhouse tests,we found14plants onwhich bagradabug fedheavily, out of 38 agricultural crops andweed plants evaluated. The opportunistic use of host plants other than crucifers, the use of soil oviposition sites, and tolerance of warm climates may contribute to its invasive potential.

Spatiotemporal Distribution of Chinavia hilaris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Corn Farmscapes
The green stink bug, Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a pest of cotton in the southeastern United States but little is known concerning its spatiotemporal distribution in corn cropping systems. Therefore, the spatiotemporal distribution of C. hilaris in farmscapes, when corn was adjacent to cotton, peanut, or both, was examined weekly. The spatial patterns of C. hilaris coun...

Chinavia hilaris (Say), Euschistus servus (Say), Euschistus tristigmus (Say), and Thyanta custator custator (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are serious pests of crops in the southeastern United States but little is known concerning their dispersal from noncrop hosts in woodlands into crops. This 2-yr study was conducted to investigate whether elderberry [Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis (L.) R. ...

Euschistus servus (Say), Nezara viridula (L.), and Chinavia hilaris (Say) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economic pests of cotton in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. The objective of this 2-yr study was to determine the ability of trap cropping systems, pheromone-baited stink bug traps, and a synthetic physical barrier at the peanut-to-cotton interface to manage stink bugs in...

Euschistus servus (Say), Chinavia hilaris (Say), and Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are economic pests of row crops. They move within and between closely associated crop and non-crop habitats throughout the growing season in response to deteriorating suitability of their current host plants. This study was conducted to investigate parasitism of naturally occurring C. hilaris and...

Native and invasive stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) and the closely related invasive Megacopta cribraria (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) are agricultural pests in the southeastern United States. Natural enemies, from various phyla, parasitize these pests and contribute to population regulation. We specifically investigated Nematoda infections in pentatomid and plataspid pests in one soybean field...
